Many of us have faced up to the problems caused by fast fashion, and are instead trying to shop more ethically.

However, there are some areas of the ethical clothing market where it’s near impossible to find what you are looking for. Ethically made underwired bras. Men’s shirts. Smart trousers, or smart jackets for example. These are almost impossible to buy, save for shopping secondhand.

On the opposite end of the scale, we’ve got the ethical hoodie market. Ethical consumers are entirely spoiled for choice when it comes to finding organic, Fairtrade and ethically produced hoodies. But where to begin finding the best hoodies according to our budget and personal ethics? To help you out, I’ve rounded up my favourites to keep you sustainably cosy.

The Best Ethical Hoodies

Let me show you some of my favourite places to buy ethical hoodies.

The price range key for this guide is £ = Under £50 | ££ = £50 – £100 | £££ = £100+

I’m mindful that everyone has different ethics when it comes to clothing. As such, this guide has been designed to be a starting-off point for you to research the most sustainable option for your own particular set of ethics.

Price: ££

FitsXS – XXL

Gender: Unisex

Looking for a unisex ethical hoodie in every colour of the rainbow? Head straight to Colorful Standard*. This sustainable essentials brand specialises in high-quality unisex clothing in almost every colour you could ever imagine.

Sounds like hyperbole? Hyperbole it is not. Their hoodies come in an amazing 55 different colours – ranging from muted neutrals to bold and vibrant tones. If you can’t find the colour of hoodie you want at Colorful Standard then it probably doesn’t exist!

The best part is that you don’t have to compromise your ethics. All of their hoodies are ethically made in Portugal using 100% organic cotton. Colorful Standard also plants one tree for every order placed.

And whilst you might be worried about the environmental impact of their dyes, you can breathe easy.  Colorful Standard says all of the dyes we use to develop their various shades are all Oeko-Tex Certified. This is an independent verification scheme where their dyes have been thoroughly tested for harmful chemicals.

What’s more, their products are garment dyed. This means that the items are first produced, and then dyed according to demand only. This way, Colorful Standard can produce their products without wasting large quantities of dye.

TenTree*, a Canadian ethical clothing company is another company to have on your ethical clothing radar. As well as making stylish ethically and sustainably produced outdoors and casual wear, they plant 10 trees for every item you purchase – hence the name!

Trees are planted in different countries – mainly Madagascar, and Indonesia – in partnership with various reforestation charities, such as Trees for the Future. It is this partnership that ensures meaningful and sustainable replanting.

Of course, it’s not just about the trees (although it’s a good place to start).  As a certified B-Corp, every TenTree item is ethically made using only sustainable fabrics.  When it comes to their hoodies, that means these are made from organic cotton.

Ninety Percent

Ninety percent black hooded jumper

Price: ££ – £££

FitsXXS – XXL

Gender: Male and female styles available

Ninety Percent* is a London-based sustainable womenswear and menswear clothing label. They produce luxury ethical basics, such as organic cotton hoodies, and stylish tops crafted from supersoft Tencel. And not only that, but they have created a pioneering profit-sharing business model too.

This approach sees Ninety Percent sharing 90% of their distributed profits between five charitable causes close to their hearts, and those who make their clothes.

You can get involved too. When you buy an item of clothing from Ninety Percent, you can choose which charity you’d like to support with your purchase. Charities include War Child UK, Wild Aid, Big Life, and more. If you can’t choose, you can select to support all causes. Here, the distributed profits will be shared equally between all of the causes.

It’s not just the materials and the profit-sharing that make Ninety Percent a top choice for ethical hoodies. Every aspect of their operations is carefully considered. Ninety Percent shy away from short-lived trends, so you won’t find any fast fashion here. Instead, you’ll only find clothes built to last, and love.

In terms of manufacturing, all of Ninety Percent’s clothing is made in Bangladesh. Whilst at first glance that might not sound so ethical, their factory is an industry-leading garment manufacturing facility that puts people, planet and product first. From fair wages, health insurance and childcare, to a free hot lunch every day, they’re dedicated to setting the very best standard.

Danish-based Organic Basics* make stylish hoodies made from 100% organic cotton, in a range of colourways and weights.

As well as avoiding synthetic blends, Organic Basics takes its environmental and social impact seriously. In fact, sustainable thinking is placed at the centre of everything at Organic Basics.

For a start, their hoodies are ethically made in factories where they commit to fair wages and good working conditions. This means their factories are free of child labour and forced labour. It also means that their workers are given a safe working space, paid a living wage, offered employee perks like free lunch and childcare, and are treated with respect at all times.

However, their environmental and social thinking doesn’t stop there. Their factories are powered by solar power for a lower impact. And Organic Basics also operates zero-waste production methods to reduce textile waste.

When it comes to your clothing, Organic Basics design their clothing to last. And your items are even shipped to you plastic-free. In short, there’s a lot to love about Organic Basics.

Patagonia

Person wearing Patagonia organic hoodie

Price: ££ – £££

FitsXS – XXL

Gender: Male and female and styles available

Patagonia’s ethical hoodies* are Fairtrade certified. This means that as well as paying the Fairtrade premium, to ensure producers are paid a fair price, Patagonia pays an additional premium for every Patagonia item that carries the Fair Trade Certified™ sewn label. That extra money then goes directly to the workers at the factory, and they decide how to spend it.

Here workers have chosen to use the premiums to fund community projects. These have included health-care programmes or a child-care centre. In other cases, workers have chosen to purchase products they could not otherwise afford, like a laptop computer or a stove. Whilst in other cases, workers have opted to take a cash bonus.

What’s more, Patagonia’s hoodies are designed to last and be repairable.  Their website also advises on how to repair all Patagonia items, which is seriously useful.  And for any clothing that can’t be repaired then you can drop it off at a Patagonia store for recycling or repurposing.

Ethical Men’s Underwear – The Best Brands for 2022

Looking for the best eco-friendly and ethical men’s underwear?  Read on for my top recommendations – from the brands that use organic cotton, to ethically sourced bamboo, hemp and more.

To help support the running costs of Moral Fibres, this post contains affiliate links, denoted by *. This means that Moral Fibres may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to readers, on items purchased through those links. This income helps keep this site running.

Recently I did a run-down of where to buy ethical women’s underwear.  In it, I promised I would write a guide to men’s ethical underwear too.  So, true to my word, here is a guide to the best ethical options for men’s pants, briefs, and boxers, depending on your preference.  I’ve also updated the article for 2022 – updated in May 2022 – so it is bang up to date.

The Ethical Men’s Underwear Brands to Check Out

As always seems to be the case when it comes to men’s ethical clothing, the market for ethical men’s underwear is considerably smaller than the women’s ethical market.  So you are a little more constrained.  But don’t despair – the market is growing. As such, I’ve tracked down some great men’s ethical underwear companies for you today.

Allbirds

person wearing Allbirds ethical men's boxers

Price Range: £20 – £24

Size: S – XXL

Allbirds*, the ethical shoe retailer, has a small but perfectly formed range of men’s ethical underwear that is made responsibly from sustainable materials.

Its trunks and boxer briefs are made from a blend of sustainable Tencel and mulesing-free merino wool. This makes for a silky-smooth fit that feels barely there. The breathable materials help to wick moisture away, keep you comfortable all day, and help to minimise odour. What’s more, its collection is available in a wide range of colours.

Allbirds say that offering a carefully curated product range fit for all seasons, means that it can maintain a small, tight-knit supply chain.

Need to stock up on undies? Allbirds has a great mix and match deal, where if you buy three pairs of socks or underwear, you get 20% off.

Available in a range of patterns and colourways, the breathable bamboo fabric provides supreme softness for your nether regions. The bamboo also wicks any moisture away to keep you dry and prevent chaffing.

Their boxers and pants are ethically produced in Europe and Turkey, with prices ranging from £12 to £18.  Additionally, sign up to the Bam: Bamboo mailing list and get 10% off your first order.

The downside is that WAMA ships their underwear from America.  Worldwide shipping is a flat fee of $20, regardless of the order value, but bear in mind you may have to pay a customs charge on your order if you are in the UK.
