Buying baby clothes can be tricky – especially if you want to balance what’s best for you and your baby and what’s best for the planet. Particularly in the babywear market, many retailers are making sustainability claims. But are they really green?
There is greenwashing abound. BCI Cotton labelling, for example, is one used by major retailers to claim they are sustainable. But, after a lot of digging, I found that BCI Cotton isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
To help you navigate the murky waters of greenwashing, I’ve picked out the best sustainable baby brands available in the UK.
I’ve focused on retailers for whom sustainability is very much part of their business ethos. From the brands focusing on organic materials and ethical production to the brands that ensure their clothing is as durable as possible. I’ve even found sustainable baby clothes brands embracing circularity through repair and reuse schemes.
Guide To Sustainable & Ethical Baby Clothes In The UK
Here are my favourite places to shop for sustainable baby clothes, from brands that prioritise both people and the planet.
Little Green Radicals
Little Green Radicals (from £8.95 at Ethical Superstore) makes sustainable and Fairtrade baby clothes ethically from 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic cotton.
This is the world’s leading standard for organic fibres, covering everything from how crops are grown to how fabrics are dyed, processed, and labelled. It ensures textiles are made with genuine organic materials while also meeting strict environmental and social criteria throughout the entire supply chain.
At Little Green Radicals, you’ll find basics, such as baby grows, bodysuits and pyjamas, stylish outfits, and baby outerwear, which are all designed to last and be passed on from child to child.
Organic Zoo
Organic Zoo (from around £25) makes timeless 100% organic clothing for babies. Its organic raw cotton comes from certified fair trade suppliers. This means that the cotton farmers get a fairer price for their crops.
Organic Zoo’s baby clothes are then designed in Brighton and ethically made in Europe. Keen to reduce wastage, any leftover fabric is cleverly used for mattress fillings.
All of Organic Zoo’s sustainable baby clothes are soft and gentle on your baby’s skin. What’s more, all of its clothing is unisex and well-made so that it’s outgrown, not worn out. This means that clothes can be passed on and enjoyed by other little ones when you’re done.
Pure Earth Collection
Pure Earth Collection make lovely sleepsuits for kids from 3 months to 3 years, that are made from 100% certified organic cotton inside and out. There’s absolutely no polyester or microplastics.
These sleepsuits are designed with padded sleeves, fold-over mitts, and fold-over feet, to keep your little one cosy all night long. This makes them particularly useful if your baby sleeps in a baby sleeping bag.

PO.P
As well as selling pre-term clothes for premature babies (the only ethical retailer I’ve found offering this), PO.P (formerly Polarn O. Pyret) (from £12) has the largest collection of eco-friendly baby clothes going. From GOTS-certified organic cotton to organic wool and other sustainable materials, you’ll find every item of sustainable baby clothes you could ever need here.
Every garment is made to last at least 3 children, if not many more. What’s more, many of its styles are designed to grow with your little one. From roll-down cuffs to adjustable waists and extendable bodysuits, everything has been carefully considered.
PO.P has many great sustainability measures in place, too. For example, it offers a free repair service to fix zips and replace broken poppers on all of its outerwear garments. This is regardless of when they were purchased.
It also runs a handy trade-in scheme. Here, when your child grows out of their PO.P clothes, you can send them back (as long as they are functional and not heavily stained). Its bold and bright clothes feature clever components to make for fuss-free changing. This includes envelope necklines and leg poppers. What’s more, you’ll find extra room to fit cloth nappies comfortably.

Frugi
Finally, Frugi (from around £23 at Ethical Superstore) makes wonderfully colourful and fun sustainable baby clothes and sleeping sacks, all made from GOTS-certified cotton
What I love is that a lot of thought has gone into the making of Frugi’s baby clothes. The clever two-way zip design on its suits means that you do not need to remove the whole suit when changing your baby’s nappy. Genius!
What’s more, some of Frugi’s clothing features clever extendable cuffs that unfold. This allows the all-in-ones to grow with your baby and means you can get a longer lifespan out of your baby’s clothes.
Many of Frugi’s baby clothes have also been designed to fit over fluffy cloth nappies, which can be a bit bulkier than disposables. Many baby clothes manufacturers design with disposable nappies in mind, so it’s refreshing to find baby clothes that are designed to accommodate reusable nappies.
Where To Source Preloved Baby Clothes
As with anything, the most sustainable baby clothes are ones that you have been able to source secondhand. Some of my favourite places to source baby clothes secondhand include Vinted, eBay, Facebook, and charity shops.
My top tip is to pop something like “3 6 months bundle” into the search bar, to find people selling aged 3 – 6 months baby clothes in bundles.
