Looking for sustainable and ethical furniture brands in the UK that both look good and do good? Here are my top eco-friendly recommendations – from reclaimed to recycled and much more.

Some brands have paid to be featured here โ€“ identifiable by the AD tag after the brand name. I only select brands that I genuinely believe are doing good things for people and the planet.

In the last few decades, the concept of ‘fast furniture’ has been recognised as an increasing environmental problem.

Fast furniture means furniture that is mass-produced and of low quality and a low price – essentially designed to be disposable when fashions change.

In fact, in the UK alone we bin nearly 22 million small items of furniture a year. Often, because of the complexity of materials used, many of these get sent to landfill rather than recycled.

As an antithesis to the fast furniture trend, a whole host of sustainable furniture brands have come to the fore. Focusing on using natural materials, or reclaimed, recycled or easily recyclable materials, these brands are looking to lighten the load on the planet, whilst helping you to create a sustainably stylish home.

With some brands offering long guarantees, from anywhere between 5 years to lifetime guarantees you can also ensure your next purchase won’t end up in landfill in a year’s time.

But where to find these brands? Don’t worry, I’ve got you!

The Sustainable Furniture Brands In The UK To Check Out

Thankfully there are a host of sustainable furniture brands in the UK, to help you furnish your home in an eco-friendly way without compromising on aesthetics. Whatever your style, and whatever the room, there are heaps of options that both look good and tread lightly on the planet.

I’ve focused on brands that prioritise the use of reclaimed or recycled materials, certified sustainably sourced materials, or predominantly natural materials. Should these brands be out of your budget, then keep reading as I’ve also got some budget-friendly ways of environmentally-friendly furnishing your home.

Nkuku

Nkuku handmade ethical armchair in yellow velvet - part of its furniture collection.

Nkuku creates stunning ethical and eco-friendly pieces of furniture by working with natural, recycled and reclaimed materials and using sustainable production methods.

Its timeless pieces of stunning furniture are handmade by artisans across the globe, all operating under Fair Trade principles.

These artisans use eco-conscious materials to create furniture for almost every room in your home. These materials include sustainable hemp and jute. Other materials include sustainably grown rattan, corn husk, water hyacinth, and mango wood – a by-product of the mango industry. These products are then transported via sea freight, rather than air, to minimise carbon emissions.

From ethical furniture for your living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, hallway, home office, and even your garden, Nkuku has you covered.

Rather than being fashion-led, Nkuku’s style is slow. It aims to make timeless products for the home. This means that Nkuku is careful to introduce new products that complement existing lines to encourage the continuity and longevity of collections. This means you can slowly build up pieces for your home when your budget allows, and the pieces will work together beautifully.

So that your furniture arrives as sustainably as possible, Nkuku is working hard to find sustainable packaging solutions. This has included removing polystyrene from all packaging and replacing plastic bubble wrap with corrugated cardboard.

Home Of Wool – AD

A beautifully styled, neutral-toned bedroom featuring a natural and minimalist aesthetic. The space includes a large bed with organic bedding, a wooden crib with a baby nest, a wicker Moses basket with a soft toy, and various eco-conscious furnishings like a rattan chair, a floor cushion with a childrenโ€™s book, and plush seating. Light filters through sheer curtains, and the room is accented with potted plants, soft lighting, and natural textures, creating a calm, sustainable family living environment.

Home of Wool is a small, family-run atelier based in Sofia, Bulgaria, that makes all-natural wool mattresses, toppers and headboard cushions. Whilst itโ€™s not strictly a UK-based brand, itโ€™s not one to overlook. Home Of Wool offers free UK shipping, with all taxes and duties included in the final price. This means there are no hidden charges or fees payable on delivery.

Each item is made to order by skilled artisans, using only the finest natural materials that are GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified, and time-honoured traditional techniques. Absolutely nothing is mass produced.

Home of Wool uses only wool sourced from small European farms, where sheep graze freely and are treated humanely, without the use of mulesing. Whatโ€™s more, Home of Wool doesnโ€™t use any chemicals, glues, dyes, or synthetic fibres. Even the threads it uses are plastic-free for your most natural nightโ€™s sleep.

Home of Wool also has a very strict zero-waste philosophy, where off-cuts are used to make other products. These values were ones that Home of Wool was founded on, and itโ€™s something it’s never compromised on.

Why wool? Home of Wool says that wool is a miracle-fibre, as itโ€™s been backed up by science to naturally regulate your temperature. This helps you stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Itโ€™s also hypoallergenic, and naturally flame resistant – without the need for any chemical treatments.

Alongside mattresses and toppers, Home of Wool also creates everything you need for a comfortable and sustainable nightโ€™s sleep. This includes wool-filled duvets and pillows, mattress protectors, blankets, sheets, and bedding sets. It even makes wool camping gear – including sleeping bags and sleeping mats! Riz & Mica Make

Reclaimed dining table and benches

Riz & Mica Make (available on Etsy) are Rizwan and Mica, a couple from London, who make beautiful pieces of furniture using exclusively reclaimed wood or FSC-certified material for their plywood range.

They aim to make items that are extremely well-built but still look sleek and bring out the beauty of the reclaimed materials used, and they achieve this with great effect. From desks to dining tables, bookshelves to garden furniture, and more, Rizwan and Mica make some stunning furniture that celebrates the joy of reclaimed materials.

Every piece of reclaimed furniture is hand-crafted from 100% reclaimed wood, which would otherwise go to landfill or be burnt. This wood is first dried in special low-energy wood kilns designed in-house, bringing its moisture content to that found in European homes. Once dry, it is carefully cleaned and scanned for metal before construction begins. This lengthy process allows Rizwan and Mica to make quality pieces which will last.

As each piece is made by hand, all of their reclaimed items can be made smaller free of charge, should you have a specific space where a standard size just won’t fit. Rizwan and Mica also take commissions, should you have a specific piece of furniture in mind.

Despite being a very small business, Rizwan and Mica have really considered how to make their business as sustainable as possible. To minimise waste, they have designed and built their own cyclone dust separator in the workshop. This means they can dust-extract their wood shavings to sell. They are also looking into creating biochar – a material that stores carbon and improves soil health – from their offcuts.

Silentnight

Silentnight eco comfort bed made from recycled materials.

Silentnight may not be the first brand that comes to mind when you think of sustainable furniture. But did you know that every Silentnight product is made right here in the UK?

It’s true. Based in Barnoldswick in Lancashire, its manufacturing site employs over 700 staff. This includes skilled craft and tradespeople who build mattresses, beds and headboards to the highest standards. This means your bed hasn’t travelled across the globe to get to you, saving carbon.

Of course, there’s more to sustainability than just where an item is made. The good news is that Silentnight has been beavering away at increasing its sustainability credentials.

This work has seen Silentnight reducing its carbon emissions by 49% over the last 4 years, by greening its factory and distribution network.

Silentnight has also given its beds and mattresses a green makeover. Each year it uses the equivalent of 105 million recycled plastic bottles to make comfort layers for its mattresses. Known as the Eco Comfort Fibreโ„ข pad, this is now used in 85% of all Silentnight mattresses.

Bed and headboard frames are made from FSC-certified wood. The fabric used is Oeko-tex approved – meaning that it is certified free from up to 350 toxic chemicals. Any polyester used is predominantly recycled and is Global Recycled Standard certified.

The brand also implements a zero-to-landfill policy. This means Silentnight now repurposes manufacturing waste that previously went to landfill – to the tune of 230 tonnes a year – turning it into pads for its mattresses. Silentnight’s mattresses are also fully recyclable, through Silentnight’s own recycling scheme.

I use a Silentnight eco-comfort mattress. I’ve had it for eight years now, and it’s remained incredibly comfortable without any sagging. It’s definitely been built to last!

Graham & Green

Graham and Green recycled wood chair

Graham & Green offers a collection of recycled and reclaimed furniture. Whilst not all of its range of furniture is recycled or reclaimed, its incredibly stylish eco-friendly range is again, large enough to be more than a passing nod to sustainability. This includes products made from reclaimed or recycled wood or sustainable materials, such as mango wood.

Look out for beautiful pieces for your living room, bedroom, hallway, home office, bathroom and more.

Graham & Green also partners with the charity Jamie’s Farm. This charity seeks to help vulnerable young people be better equipped to thrive during secondary school years and beyond. Combining farming, family, and therapy, the team has helped more than 9,500 children find a renewed sense of purpose and happiness when all the other odds were stacked against them.

Graham & Green staff volunteer on the farm, join fundraising efforts, such as charity walks, and give a monthly donation to the farm.

Scaramanga

Vintage wooden cabinet from Scaramanga

The Scaramanga eBay store has heaps of original and unique vintage furniture suitable for every room. From antique wooden trunks and chests to cabinets, cupboards, and mirrors these are just some of the unique vintage treasures you can find.

Scaramanga sources only old and vintage furniture made from tropical hardwoods such as teak, rosewood and fruitwood. It does not sell new furniture, nor is any piece mass-produced to look old. That means each piece is individually selected and, where necessary, expertly restored using skilled craftspeople and carpenters.

Any restoration carried out is done sympathetically. In many cases, restoring a piece of furniture entirely to its original state would result in it potentially losing its character, history and appeal. Therefore, many pieces of furniture may have some imperfections consistent with their age and original use to maintain their charm.

Each piece of furniture will be delivered to your door in full working order, cleaned and polished, and ready to last a lifetime.

Muju Furniture

Muju Furniture (available at Etsy) is a family business run by husband and wife duo Mark and Julie, who, alongside their small team of skilled craftspeople, design and make every piece by hand in their Cheshire workshop.

Making bespoke sustainable furniture using reclaimed and FSC-certified timber from reputable suppliers, their mission is simple: to create high-quality solid wood furniture that fits.

My beautiful work desk is from Muju – that’s my desk in my understairs office in the picture. I can confirm it still looks as good as the day it arrived, 6 years later.

Muju Furniture offers Scandinavian, Industrial, Rustic and Mid Century Modern solid wood furniture – all made to measure – creating unique and beautiful designs that can last a lifetime.

All their furniture is made to order, and this means most of their products can be customised. From the choice of legs – either hairpin legs or Danish wooden tapered legs – to the colour of the wood stain used, to the use of any Farrow & Ball colour where appropriate. This allows you to create a unique piece of furniture specific to you and your home.

Muju is committed to tree planting. This means they plant trees, through Ecologi, their tree planting partner, regularly, whether you buy from Muju or not.

Barker & Stonehouse

Barker and Stonehouse sustainable blue sofa made from recycled materials

Barker & Stonehouse is a British independent and family-run furniture retailer, running since its first store opened in 1946 in Stockton on Tees.

Whilst not every item of furniture that Barker & Stonehouse sells is eco-friendly, its sustainable range is large enough to make it more than simply lip service to sustainability.

Most impressive is its range of stylish and comfortable sofas. Here every component is 100% recyclable and made from sustainable materials. The fabric and cushions are made from recycled plastic bottles, whilst the wooden feet and timber frames are sustainably sourced.

Barker & Stonehouse also makes luxurious mattresses, which they say are the first in the world to be 100% recyclable. Meanwhile, its huge range of reclaimed furniture makes it one of the UKโ€™s biggest retailers of reclaimed furniture.

Working with the Trees4Trees initiative, Barker & Stonehouse also plants a new tree for every delivery it makes. Its stores have also been designed and constructed with the environment firmly front of mind – from solar panels to living walls, and a focus on energy efficiency and waste reduction. Delivery routes are also carefully planned to reduce carbon emissions. This work has seen Barker & Stonehouse independently verified as carbon neutral.

Other Places To Pick Up Sustainable Furniture On A Budget

Of course, buying new recycled or reclaimed furniture is only one way to be sustainable. If your budget doesn’t fit with any of the above options, then shopping secondhand is another great way to furnish your home in an eco-friendly way, without breaking the budget.

Here are some of my favourite places to find secondhand furniture for your home:

Antique Shops/Auctions

Antique shops or auctions can be pricey, but shop around and you can find some great bargains. Don’t be put off by the price tag. Antique dealers are often open to haggling, so the price listed is not necessarily the price you will pay. If you visit an auction, either in person or online, then it’s easy to get carried away when bidding. Set your maximum price, and stay firm on it!

Charity Shops

vintage glass cabinet

Charity shops can be great places to find sustainable secondhand furniture. I found this cabinet in a charity shop for ยฃ15. Originally a dark brown stain that didn’t fit with our decor, we could see past that. With a lick of paint and a little bit of lace, it’s become a piece of furniture we’ve cherished since we moved in together over 15 years ago.

Look out for charity shops specialising in furniture, for the most choice. Many charity shops also offer delivery (for a fee), so don’t be put off if you don’t have any means of transporting your dream item home.

eBay

eBay is another top choice for sustainable secondhand furniture. Many people selling furniture on eBay offer local pick-up only. Use the filter to search for furniture close to you, or alternatively look out for sellers that offer delivery via a courier service.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a great place to find secondhand furniture going cheap or free in your local area.

For items listed for free, it can be quite competitive. It’s a case of getting in quickly and being able to collect the item.

When you respond to the seller, ask if the item is available, and tell them when you can collect it. Most people listing furniture for free want rid of the item as quickly as possible, so if you can collect that day then you’ll be viewed more favourably than someone who wants to collect the item the following week.

Freecycle

If you’re looking to furnish your home on zero budget, then Freecycle is the ultimate place to look. It’s much like Facebook Marketplace, in that you have to get in quickly and in most cases, you have to be able to collect.

Gumtree

Gumtree is another top spot to find preloved furniture at preloved prices, or even free. Again, particularly for freebies, the etiquette is much the same as on Facebook Marketplace. Be quick, and offer to collect promptly for the most chance of success!

Re-Shop & Re-Use at IKEA

Finally, Re-Shop & Re-Use at IKEA is the place to go to pick up bargain preloved IKEA pieces from its Buyback service, as well as ex-display and discontinued pieces. It’s all part of IKEA’s work to be more circular in its operations.
