Get crafting the sustainable way this Easter, with these fun and easy recycled egg carton crafts that kids and adults can make.
If you are looking to get crafty this Easter, then I find it’s always cheaper and more sustainable to recycle something you already have at home.
Craft kits that you can buy can be expensive, and tend to be packaged in single-use plastic, and/or come with plastic components such as pipe cleaners and googly eyes. However, plastic is not fantastic – for humans, for wildlife, or for the climate. Plus it is always way more fun to rustle up something from the contents of your recycling bin!
If you are looking for some eco-friendly ideas, then I recommend you keep any empty cardboard egg cartons and try transforming them into cute Easter decorations. I’ve got heaps of fun DIYs from around the internet that I’ve been saving for me and my kids to make. I thought it would be fun to share them, to inspire you to get sustainably crafty too!
Eco-Friendly Egg Box Crafts For Easter To Make
Ready to get crafting? Here are my favourite Easter-themed egg carton crafts that you can make:
Recycled Bunny Portraits

How cute are these bunny portraits by The Unschooled Project? I think there’s something quite Wes Anderson about them!
Whilst the Unschooled Project doesn’t have a specific DIY guide to making them, it looks to me like you cut the middle section out of your egg carton for the face. You also need some recycled card for the background and the ears.
Cheeky Egg Carton Chick
This fun DIY from Sunny Queen Farms is another easy Easter make. All you need is an egg box and a little bit of recycled paper or card. If your egg box is already yellow then you’re pretty much there, but if you don’t have yellow egg boxes then some watercolour paint on a pale-coloured egg box would also work.
Egg Carton Chicken

If you’ve made a chick, you may well want a mummy chicken to go alongside it! The International Elf Service has a great craft tutorial for making this cute chicken entirely from an egg box. Even the beak, comb and wattle are made from the carton.
Once you’ve made it you can fill the back with mini chocolate eggs, or a regular egg-sized chocolate egg. You could even hard boil and paint a regular egg. The choice is yours!
Egg Carton Daffodils
Fresh daffodils are always nice to have in your home at Easter time. If you want to have a go at crafting some, Caitlin Ball has a lovely DIY guide showing you how to make this beautiful bunch from recycled egg cartons. Caitlin uses pipe cleaners to make the stems but you could try using floristry wire if you are looking for a plastic-free alternative.
Spring Floral Wreath

Keeping with the floral theme, the blog Supermakeit has a crafty guide to making your own spring flower wreath from the contents of your recycling bin. You need two large egg boxes for this one. Supermakeit also suggests using a paper plate as the base but you could cut out a circle shape from recycled cardboard if you don’t have a paper plate to hand. Try using a dinner plate to draw around to get the right size.
Recycled Carrot Garland
The German blog Hallo Eltern has a fun tutorial on how to make these cute Easter-themed carrot garlands. All you need are some egg boxes, string and some green crepe paper.
Note that the instructions for this tutorial are in German. My German is a little rusty, so I used Google Translate to help me out and it did a pretty good job.
Egg Box Bunny Rabbits
If you want to add some cute zero-waste bunnies to your Easter décor, then try these egg box bunny rabbits by Red Ted Art. You need very little by way of supplies. If you’ve got an egg carton, and some basic crafting supplies, basically you are all set to get making!
Upcycled Easter Table Decorations
If you want to try something a little more involved, then Anna Albert Cutrina has the DIY for you. These cute Easter bunnies are made from egg cartons and wooden beads, whilst the carrots are made solely from the cartons.
The original post is in Spanish, but watch out. I found that Instagram’s built-in translation service wasn’t able to fully translate the caption. I had to copy and paste it into Google Translate to be able to read the full thing.
Egg Carton Bluebells
Easter isn’t just about daffodils. Bluebells are another beautiful flower associated with springtime. If you want to incorporate them into your seasonal décor, then Buggy & Buddy has an easy DIY guide to make these beautiful bluebells. Even the insides can be made from recycled paper for an extra sustainable touch!
Egg Carton Easter Bonnets
Finally, if you want to craft an Easter bonnet out of your old egg cartons then you’re in luck. Hello Wonderful has a great tutorial to make these recycled floral crowns. Hello Wonderful suggest placing mini pompoms in the insides of the flowers, but as these tend to be made from plastic, I’d suggest scrunching up some scrap paper instead. You’ll get a similar effect, in a plastic-free and zero-waste way.
