Vegan Mattresses: The UK Brands To Know

When you transition to a vegan lifestyle, you start finding animal products in the sneakiest of places. Sometimes it’s your favourite bottle of wine or brand of beer. Yup, a gelatin-based substance derived from fish is used as a clarifying agent in some beer and wine brands.
Sometimes non-vegan ingredients pop up in your favourite cosmetics brands. And sometimes non-vegan-friendly materials pop up in the things you don’t really think about, such as the mattress you sleep on every night.
Most standard mattresses are made with animal-derived materials, including wool and animal-based glues. This includes some organic mattresses, which can contain animal-derived materials. While I don’t recommend binning a perfectly good mattress, this guide serves to help you out the next time you need to replace your mattress.
The Vegan-Friendly & Cruelty-Free Mattress Brands In The UK
Up until recently, finding a vegan mattress meant opting for a memory foam mattress. Having tried these mattresses, I was never impressed with their comfort levels.
Thankfully, things are changing. Plant-based fibres have come a long way in recent years, as has bed technology. Now vegan mattresses can perform just like traditional wool-filled mattresses.
Here are the four best vegan mattresses I’ve come across, combining vegan and cruelty-free fabrics and fillings, with comfort and ethics. You can use the quick links to skip to information about each brand, or simply keep scrolling to read the full guide.

About Silentnight
Silentnight, one of the UK’s most well-known bedding brands, makes all of its products right here in the UK.
Silentnight has been working on improving the sustainability of both its products and operations over the last few years. In fact, it has reduced its carbon emissions by 49% over the last 4 years, by greening its factory and distribution network.
Silentnight has also given its mattresses a green makeover. More than 85% of its mattresses are vegan-friendly, with many using Global Recycling Standard-certified recycled materials.
The brand also implements a zero-to-landfill policy. This means Silentnight now repurposes manufacturing waste that previously went to landfill – to the tune of 230 tonnes a year – turning it into pads for its mattresses.
About The EcoComfort Mattress
Silentnight’s EcoComfort Breathe range aims to give you a better night’s sleep, as well as helping to keep oceans and landfills clear of plastic waste. How does Silentnight do that? Its EcoComfort mattresses are cleverly made from recycled plastic bottles.
There’s zero compromise on performance. Individual Mirapocket springs provide vital support for your back and body. These springs are intelligently zoned, providing better support to common problem areas such as your back and hips.
Pocket springs also move individually, meaning there is no roll-together and minimal partner disturbance when sharing a bed.
Silentnight doesn’t shout about how vegan-friendly its range is, but I double-checked with Silentnight. It said (in September 2023) that all mattresses in its EcoComfort range are “all chemical & foam free and we don’t use any animal-based materials, even glue.”
Materials
Silentnight’s Eco Comfort mattress collection has been produced using Global Recycled Standard certified recycled plastic bottles. It takes 150 plastic bottles to make each of its vegan-friendly mattresses, saving around 105 million plastic bottles each year from landfills and oceans. The bottles are then recycled into soft polyester, which is used to craft the mattresses.
Worried that sleeping on plastic sounds sweaty? The mattresses have been made in a way that makes them highly breathable and cooling. We’ve been using an Eco-Comfort mattress for about six years now and don’t find it hot or sweaty.
The fabric used is Oeko-tex approved – meaning that it is certified free from up to 350 toxic chemicals. As it is naturally flame retardant, it’s also free from foam and chemical treatments. Plus the mattress is fully recyclable at the end of its life through Silentnight’s recycling scheme.
Manufacturing
As a UK-based bedding brand, Silentnight makes each one of its products in Lancashire. Here it employs over 700 staff, including the skilled craft and tradespeople who build all of Silentnight’s mattresses to the highest standards.
Silentnight is also National Bed Federation (NBF) accredited. To be an NBF-approved member, the company must meet industry-recognised standards. This includes undergoing independent assessment and audit, and the inspection of manufacturing sites to ensure the company is working to best practice.

- I feel the tension levels are slightly misleading. After my own experience, I would say opt for a softer mattress than you would normally. I prefer a medium mattress, but after trying out the medium, it was far too firm. We swapped it for a medium-soft, which feels more like a medium tension.

This UK brand makes all of its mattresses in Leicester using vegan-friendly fabrics and fillings, whilst utilising over 30 years of experience in creating some of the UK’s best mattresses.
About the Vegan 3000 Pocket Mattress
Vogue’s Vegan 3000 Pocket Mattress is one to have on your radar. This mattress brings together eco-friendly materials and sustainable manufacturing practices, alongside 3000 traditional pocket springs. This gives you a comfortable and supportive sleep, whilst leaving you safe in the knowledge that no animals have been harmed in its production.
The mattress also uses clever technology to emulate the deeply cushioned comfort layer of more expensive pillow-topped mattresses. The discreetly stitched dimples mimic the feel of the traditional deep tufts, without any annoying knots, for a smooth uninterrupted surface.
Materials
Vogue Mattresses are made using a range of hypoallergenic vegan materials, including recycled plastic. Here the latest technology is used to turn the recycled plastic into advanced layers of support to provide a comfortable, luxurious sleeping experience. These are made in such a way as to allow maximum breathability, helping to regulate your body temperature at night.
The whole mattress is then encased in a breathable vegan-friendly cover. And when you’re done, every part of this mattress can then be fully recycled at the end of its life.
Manufacturing
All Vogue Mattresses are made by hand in Leicester, on a dedicated assembly line. Whilst the Vogue Beds group does make other non-vegan-friendly mattresses, it manufactures its vegan mattresses first thing in the morning. This prevents any cross-contamination and ensures no animal-derived fillings come into contact with its vegan mattresses.
Whilst there is little information available on the ethical standards that Vogue Mattresses works to, it is NBF accredited – providing independent assurance that it works to best practice.

Sleepeezee is a British mattress manufacturer, who has been making beds since 1924. Based in Kent, it makes a wide range of mattresses – including a sizeable vegan range. In 2020, it became the first UK bed manufacturer to receive the Planet Mark accreditation for its work in reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
About Sleepeezee’s Vegan Mattresses
Sleepeezee makes a wide range of vegan-friendly and cruelty-free mattresses, across a host of different ranges so it’s difficult to pinpoint just one mattress or range to focus on.
For example, the Cool Rest range is engineered for hot sleepers so that they can better regulate their temperature, ensuring a cool and comfortable night’s sleep. Meanwhile, the Immerse range is engineered for those who require pressure relief.
Materials
Whilst Sleepeezee does make mattresses from animal-based materials, its large vegan range – made without animal-based fabrics or derivatives – suggests the brand is paying more than just lip service to cruelty-free shoppers.
However, whilst Sleepeezee says it aims to source its materials from sustainable suppliers – there are no further details on how this works in practice. Plus there are no details on the vegan materials it uses. I’d love to see more detail offered to customers.
Manufacturing
Sleepeezee manufactures its beds at its solar-powered factory in Rochester, Kent. Here over 300 expert craftspeople build bespoke beds to its premium standards, whilst ensuring that no waste from its factory goes to landfill.
Whilst there is no other information available on how Sleepeezee manufactures its beds, it is NBF accredited – providing independent assurance that it works to best practice.
