Why I Rate It

After a sustainable hypoallergenic duvet made entirely from natural materials? I would head straight to The Wool Room.

Its lovely range of duvets are handcrafted from traceable British wool and then completely encased in super soft cotton – there are zero synthetic fibres here. The end result is a supremely soft (not itchy) duvet that’s very breathable and durable.

The Wool Room’s duvets are also certified by The British Allergy Foundation as non-allergenic. In fact, they are the only wool duvets to hold the Allergy UK Seal of Approval.

The Wool Room only sources the highest quality UK wool, carrying out the most stringent checks to ensure the highest welfare of the sheep and fair pay for farmers. You can scan the QR code on your product tag and you can trace the origins of your wool right back to the farmers and sheep who provided it.

I have Wool Room’s all-season eco-friendly duvet, which I’ve been using for about six years now. In the interests of disclosure, this was given to me by The Wool Room as part of a sponsored post I worked on at the time. However, after all these years there was absolutely no expectation or agreement to include the duvet in this article. I personally want to include it as we’ve been using it this whole time.

This duvet comes in two separate parts – a thinner and a thicker tog – which fasten together with poppers. This gives you the flexibility to switch your duvet up depending on the season.

I did find it took a little getting used to at first. A wool duvet is a different experience from that of a down or synthetic duvet. Instead of a lofty quilt, The Wool Room’s duvets are denser, flatter and a little heavier. Visually it resembles a wool-filled patchwork quilt.

There’s a good reason for this. If a loose wool filling was used, you would have lots of patches where the wool moves. This would leave you with cold and warm spots when sleeping. The way the duvets are constructed avoid this from happening for the best night’s sleep possible.

Once I got used to this, I was a convert. It’s cosy in winter, cool in the summer, and very durable – still feeling and looking great after all this time.

Pros

  • Made sustainably and ethically from traceable British wool.
  • All Woolroom duvets are suitable for those with allergies and
  • Made only from 100% natural fibres and materials
  • Naturally thermoregulates
  • Risk-free return policy

Cons

  • The all-season duvet can be heavy in winter when both parts are in use. I’m a side or front sleeper and I quite like that it’s heavy – I find it quite soothing. However, my partner sleeps on his back and sometimes finds the weight of it on his feet a little uncomfortable.
  • The classic range is not machine washable
  • Some options are on the more expensive side.

  • Filling: 50:50 blend of bamboo and Nano-Microfibre™, made from recycled water bottles.
  • Care: Machine washable.
  • Made in: China
  • Customers say: Luxuriously soft, and warm in winter and cool in summer

Why I Rate It

If you’re looking for a vegan-friendly duvet made from more natural materials, then Panda London’s bamboo duvet is the one to look at.

Filled with a blend of 50% bamboo fibre and 50% nano microfibre made from recycled water bottles, it’s then covered in 100% bamboo-based rayon. This is all tested and certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 – an independent certification where every component of the product, from the fabric to the thread and accessories, has been rigorously tested against a list of up to 350 toxic chemicals.

The result is a light and fluffy eco-friendly duvet that’s super soft and snuggly. Panda London says that bamboo is naturally thermo-regulating, providing insulation in the winter yet is breathable and cool in the summer. Plus with a clever pocket construction – this ensures the filling is evenly distribution across the duvet to prevent any cold spots.

Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, fungi, mildew and dust mites – making it a great hypoallergenic choice if you have eczema, sensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mites.

Pros

  • Good range of sizes – from toddler beds through to super king beds
  • Vegan-friendly
  • Machine washable

Cons

  • No all-season options – so you may find it too cold in winter, or too warm in summer.
  • May have a potentially larger carbon footprint, compared to more locally made duvets, as it’s made in China.
  • No opportunity to return this duvet if it doesn’t suit you.

Earthkind Recycled Down Duvet

A bed made with an Earthkind recycled feather duvet.

  • Sizes available: single, double, king size, and super king size duvets

  • Available from: John Lewis
  • Vegan-friendly: No
  • Tog rating: 4.5 tog, 10 tog and 13.5 tog options available
  • Best for: Buyers looking for feather duvets made from reclaimed feathers
  • Is there a trial period/can I return it? Can only be returned if unopened and unused.
  • Outer: 100% cotton
  • Filling: 100% recycled and reclaimed feathers and down
  • Care: Machine washable at 40°C.
  • Made in: The UK
  • Customers say: Lightweight, squishy and cosy.

Why I Rate It

If you prefer a feather-filled duvet, then I rate Earthkind’s collection of recycled feather and reclaimed down duvets which are made with 100% recycled feathers. These are transformed from pre-loved bedding into new fillings for a zero-waste approach to bedding.

Sounds icky? Don’t worry. Pre-loved pillows and duvets containing feather and down fillings are reclaimed, sorted and cleaned by Earthkind at its family-owned bedding factory in Lancashire. After a thorough check to remove any feathers and down that are too fine, the feathers and down are then sterilised and heat-treated.

Before being packed into the duvet, the filling is then rigorously checked to ensure it is of the highest possible quality. This process also gives the filling a softer and quieter texture, so you can enjoy a better night’s sleep. This approach gives a luxurious and cosy duvet that will make getting out of bed that bit harder!

Duvets and pillows are hard to recycle, so this eco-friendly approach helps to keep products out of landfill. Reclaiming valuable resources and then transforming them into new bedding in this manner means that nothing goes from Earthkind’s factory to landfill.

To back up its claims, Earthkind has both Global Recycling Standard (GRS) certification and Zero Waste to Landfill accreditation.

Pros

  • Earthkind takes hard-to-recycle items that would otherwise go to landfill to create zero-waste duvets.
  • Made in the UK, so supports local production.
  • Available in a range of togs.
  • Machine washable.

Cons

  • Would like to see the outer cover made from organic cotton, rather than standard cotton.
  • No opportunity to return the duvet if you try it and don’t like it.

Silentnight Eco Comfort

A grey bed with a Silentnight eco comfort duvet on it.

Specifications:

  • Sizes available: single, double, and king-size duvets

  • Customers say: Light and warm

Why I Rate It

Want to beat plastic waste in your sleep? It’s not a dream – with Silentnight’s Eco Comfort duvet, you can. Each duvet is filled with what Silentnight call Eco Comfort Fibres™.

This high-performance filling is made in Manchester from 100% recycled plastic bottles which have been melted down and spun into a luxuriously soft, light and fluffy fibre filling. In fact, Silentnight says that each eco-friendly duvet has prevented at least 32 plastic bottles from going into landfill or our oceans. Each duvet is then encased in a chemical treatment-free embossed polyester fabric.

The Eco Comfort duvet is hypoallergenic which means it does not contain any materials that are likely to cause allergies. The duvet is also fully machine washable at 40°C which means you can keep it feeling fresh and clean for longer.

Pros

  • Vegan-friendly.
  • With prices ranging between £28 for a single duvet and £34 for a king-sized duvet, it’s a budget-friendly way to green your sleep.
  • Made in the UK – so supports local production.

Cons

  • No opportunity to return this eco-friendly duvet if it doesn’t suit you.
  • As it’s only available in one tog option, it may be too warm in summer or too cold in winter for some.
