Here are my top UK recommendations for sustainable, ethical and organic t-shirts for men and women.

With growing awareness of the environmental and social costs tied to fast fashion, more people are rethinking what they wear and looking for ways to build a more sustainable wardrobe.

A good place to begin is with the humble t-shirt. Alongside our jeans, itโ€™s one of the hardest-working pieces we own. We work out in our t-shirts, we dress them up, we dress them down, and we chill out in them.

If you are looking for a more sustainable t-shirt, then the good news is that thereโ€™s no shortage of options. Eco-conscious choices are more widely available than ever before, in an inclusive range of sizes.

The challenge, though, is knowing which t-shirt brands are genuinely better for people and the planet, and which brands are just greenwashing you.

The Sustainable T-Shirt Brands In The UK To Know

To help you out, I’ve rounded up the very best sustainable t-shirts where ethical considerations aren’t just a marketing ploy, but central to how these brands do business. I’ve also aimed to find size-inclusive brands that offer budget-friendly t-shirts under ยฃ50.

The price range key for this guide is ยฃ = Under ยฃ50 | ยฃยฃ = ยฃ50 โ€“ ยฃ100 | ยฃยฃยฃ = ยฃ100+

Iโ€™m mindful that everyone has different ethics when it comes to clothing. As such, this guide has been designed to be a starting point for you to research the most sustainable option for your own particular set of ethics.

BAM

If you are looking for eco-friendly t-shirts for sports and exercise, then BAM is one to look at. BAM offers a wide range of t-shirts made for both men and women, which have been manufactured ethically and responsibly from sustainable materials.

Made from bamboo and organic cotton, its lightweight and highly breathable jersey t-shirts are naturally cool and comfortable. Many t-shirts in the range also have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50+. This means the t-shirt blocks 98% of the sunโ€™s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

BAM’s t-shirts are ethically produced in Europe and Turkey, with prices around the ยฃ25 mark.

Allbirds

  • Caters For: Men (sizes XS – 3XL) and Women (UK sizes 4 โ€“ 26 )

Allbirds, the ethical shoe retailer, has a small but perfectly formed range of size-inclusive casual t-shirts for men and women made responsibly from sustainable materials. These are available in a range of colours and styles – from classic fit t-shirts to long and short-sleeved t-shirts, and t-shirts for running in.

These are made from a blend of sustainable Tencel and mulesing-free merino wool, for a breathable and silky smooth feel. The inclusion of merino wool means Allbird tees aren’t vegan-friendly, though, so that’s something to bear in mind.

Allbirds says that offering a carefully curated product range fit for all seasons means that it can maintain a small, tight-knit supply chain.

Rapanui

  • Budget: ยฃ
  • Caters for: Men (sizes XS – XXL) and women (UK sizes 8 โ€“ 24)

With a focus on 100% organic cotton and a commitment to circularity, Rapanui is a great choice when it comes to ethical t-shirts.

There is a variety of choices when it comes to styles, colours and patterns – including plain and printed tees. This means there’s something for almost everyone.

These are all printed on demand in Rapanui’s UK factory. The factory is powered using renewable energy and is audited for a wide range of social and sustainability criteria.

What’s also to love about Rapanui is that each and every item is designed to be remade. When your tee wears out, you can send it back. It will then be recycled into new yarn, which is then used to make new Rapanui products, keeping things circular.

Plainandsimple

Plainandsimple is another great shop to check out if you are looking for ethical and eco-friendly t-shirts – with many options under ยฃ20.

This British brand is devoted to using durable, premium-quality, and sustainable materials. As such, each and every item in its collection is made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic cotton.

Plainandsimple’s range of organic t-shirts comes in a variety of styles, including crew neck, vintage cut, heavyweight boxy and long-sleeved tees. You can also take your pick from a range of different colours.

I also love that each item is made without plastic. Plainandsimple promises 0% plastic in its items – from the fabric to the threads and labels. Basically, all the places where plastic can sneakily creep into your clothing.

Because of this plastic-free approach, all Plainandsimple clothing has been designed to be taken back and remade into new clothing, or composted at the end of its life. When your tee is worn out, send it back to Plainandsimple for free. It will then recycle or compost it for you, and reward you with 15% off your next order.

Looking for a sustainable t-shirt in a very specific colour? Then head straight to Colorful Standard (available in the UK at Fat Buddha). This sustainable essentials brand specialises in high-quality 100% organic cotton clothing in a host of different colours.

Find classic fit t-shirts, oversized fit t-shirts, and long-sleeve t-shirts, in male, female and unisex styles, all around the ยฃ30 mark.

The best part is that you donโ€™t have to compromise your ethics. All of its t-shirts are ethically made in Portugal using 100% organic cotton. Colorful Standard also plants one tree for every order placed.

And whilst you might be worried about the environmental impact of all these dyes, you can breathe easily. Colorful Standard says all of the dyes it uses to develop its various shades are all Oeko-Tex Certified. This is an independent verification scheme where its dyes have been thoroughly tested for harmful chemicals.

Whatโ€™s more, Colorful Standard garment dyes its t-shirts. This means that the t-shirts are first produced, and then dyed according to demand only. This way, Colorful Standard can produce its products without wasting large quantities of dye.

Looking To Sell Sustainable and Organic T-Shirts?

Person on a beach wearing a Teemill organic t-shirt design

I often get requests from people wanting to design, print and sell their own sustainable and organic t-shirts. In particular, they are looking for recommendations for trusted suppliers or wholesalers.

I tend to point people towards Teemill. Here you can customise your own free webshop and design GOTS-certified organic cotton t-shirts and other products. Conveniently, every time someone makes an order from your store, itโ€™s sent instantly to Teemill’s factory.

Teemill then prints the design directly to the garment, packs it, and ships it straight to your customers in plastic-free packaging. Teemill also deals with any returns, making it a hassle-free process.

This print-to-order technology means zero waste, and it allows you to build an online store without inventory. This makes it a great option for starting your own ethical t-shirt business or running alongside any other products you sell.

Every Teemill garment is designed to be returned to Teemill when itโ€™s worn out, so it can be recycled and made into new Teemill products. Teemill rewards each return with store credit to incentivise returns.
