Skip the plastic decorations this Christmas, and instead try making these zero-waste toilet roll tube decorations.

At Christmas time, we collectively generate 30% more waste than at any other time of the year. But I’m in firm belief that Christmas decorations don’t have to generate waste, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make your home look and feel festive.

Instead, I encourage you rummage through your recycling bin to see what you can find. Take toilet roll tubes, for example. Yes, they may seem like something you would throw away. However, with a little imagination, they can become stunning, eco-friendly Christmas decorations.

Not sure where to get started? I’ve been searching high and low across the internet to find the best sustainable crafts and DIYs made from toilet paper tubes for you. From beautiful Christmas tree decorations to festive garlands, your home will look stunning with minimal impact on the planet.

Ready to get crafting? Here are my twelve favourite festive toilet roll tube decorations for you to make this Christmas:

Toilet Tube Bows

Most bows and festive ribbons that you can buy in the shops are made from plastic, and end up in the bin after one use. Instead, you could try making these lovely toilet tube bows. Fox Farm Home has a full DIY guide for you. It’s really easy – just a bit of cutting and sticking – but you’ll create something beautiful and sustainable.

Christmas Tree Garland

If you want to make a plastic-free decoration for your walls or mantlepiece, then this DIY by Margareta Miranti is the one for you. Made from toilet paper and string, it’s a really nice and simple yet effective eco-friendly design.

I’m not sure what the white decorations are made from – Margareta doesn’t mention this – but to me, it looks like the contents of a hole punch.

Loo Roll Tube Wreath

Wreath made from toilet roll tubes, wooden beads and wire.

If you’re looking to make an indoor garland, then I found this pretty garland by B. Liebt over on Instagram. Made from toilet roll tubes, wooden beads and wire, again, it’s simple yet beautiful and perfect for decorating your home sustainably.

Toilet Paper Roll Christmas Crackers

Homemade Christmas crackers, made from brown paper and toilet roll tubes.

Looking for an eco-conscious approach to Christmas crackers? Little Plastic Footprint makes crackers using toilet roll tubes and kraft paper. Pop in a little gift, and secure the ends with twine. They don’t go bang, but it’s a pretty and low-impact way to dress your table on Christmas Day.

Toilet Paper Roll Tree Decorations

These festive pine trees by Mr Mintz Crafts don’t just look pretty, they smell incredible too. That’s because cinnamon sticks are used to make the base of the tree.

Make them from toilet roll tubes and hang them on your tree, and make your living room smell festive at the same time. Win!

Snowflake Garland

For another take on a festive garland made from loo roll tubes, head to Laura Radniecki. Here, Laura shows you how to make these festive shapes.

All you need are some toilet paper tubes, a pair of scissors, some twine, a hole punch, and some glue, and you’re good to go.

Upcycled Christmas Gift Boxes

Over on Instagram, Sisu upcycles toilet roll tubes into sweet little gift boxes. All you need to do is push the ends in to make these lovely boxes and then fill them with sweet treats or any small gifts you are planning on giving. I’ve made these boxes before and find they work especially well for wrapping jewellery in.

Hanging Advent Calendar

For a sustainable take on advent calendars, look no further than this hanging toilet roll tube advent calendar made by Bowermere Cottage.

The toilet roll tubes are folded in, the same as in the upcycled gift box DIY above. Pop a little treat into each tube, and then tie it on to a branch with some wool or twine.

Toilet Roll Hanging Snowflake

Niki from My Scandinavian Home has an easy DIY guide to make this hanging snowflake. All you need to create this striking decoration are three loo roll tubes, a ruler, a pencil, scissors, glue and string. You can then use it to decorate your tree, windows or wall – wherever you see fit.

Festive Stamps

Parcels wrapped in brown paper and stamped with heart and star shapes made from toilet paper tubes.

Showing you just how versatile toilet roll tubes are, Panduro has made these fun heart and star stampers using folded tubes. Use them to stamp blank paper to make gift wrap and gift tags. I like to keep hold of any packaging paper that comes my way to reuse as gift wrap, so this is one way of making it look more special.

Toilet Roll Tube Trees

Cardboard pine trees made from toilet paper rolls.

Coley Kuyper Art has a lovely guide to making these festive trees from empty loo roll tubes. You could even insert a little LED tealight (never a real candle) into the bottom of each, to make a festive light-up feature.

All you need are empty toilet paper rolls, a marker or pencil, paints, and scissors, and you’ll have your own Christmas forest in no time!

Christmas Tree Fairy House

Trio of Christmas fairy houses, made from toilet paper tubes, green cardboard and wooden rounds.

Finally, this Christmas tree fairy house DIY by Studio Rosie is such a fun make. The houses are made with a toilet roll tube as the base, and the roof is green coloured paper rolled into a cone. You can even add in a battery operated tea light to add to the festive atmosphere. Gnomes are entirely optional!
