Make your Christmas tree sparkle sustainably this festive season, with these eco-friendly and zero-waste tomato puree tube decorations to DIY.
Christmas may be a time for twinkly lights and sparkly decorations, but our overreliance on plastic to get the festive look comes at a huge environmental cost.
Instead, I’m a huge fan of zero-waste Christmas decorations. These are decorations that you can make from natural materials, or by upcycling materials that would otherwise be binned to create mini festive masterpieces.
One zero-waste and plastic-free trend that has taken off in the last year or so is upcycling empty tomato puree tubes into beautiful Christmas decorations.
As you generally can’t recycle metal tubes in the UK – any food residue inside could contaminate other clean recyclables – it’s a great way to make something beautiful from something that would otherwise be binned.
These metallic tubes may seem like an unlikely material to use, but they are perfect for festive crafting. They’re flexible yet sturdy – so they can be easily cut and embossed. You only need a few basic tools and a little creativity to get started. Plus, the inside of the tube is a lovely shiny brass colour that sparkles against the glow of your Christmas lights.
All you need to do to get started is to carefully cut the tube open with scissors, give it a wash and smooth out the metal. Take care if you decide to make any of these with kids, though, the edges can be quite sharp.
