Wondering where to buy the best sustainable and ethical hoodies for men and women to keep you comfortable and warm? Read on for my top recommendations – from organic cotton hoodies to Fairtrade ones and more.

Many of us have faced up to the problems caused by fast fashion, and are instead trying to shop more ethically.

However, there are some areas of the ethical clothing market where it’s nearly impossible to find what you are looking for. Ethically made underwired bras. Men’s shirts. Smart trousers, or smart jackets for example. These are almost impossible to buy, save for shopping secondhand.

On the opposite end of the scale, we’ve got the ethical hoodie market. Ethical consumers are entirely spoiled for choice when it comes to finding organic, Fairtrade and ethically produced hoodies. But where to begin finding the best hoodies according to our budget and personal ethics? To help you out, I’ve rounded up my favourites to keep you sustainably cosy.

I’m mindful that everyone has different ethics when it comes to clothing. As such, this guide has been designed to be a starting point for you to research the most sustainable option for your own particular set of ethics.

Looking for outdoor clothing made by people who understand the meaning of outdoor performance wear? Then try Silverstick – available in the UK at Ethical Superstore.

Silverstick says it is on a mission to get people outdoors. In fact, the brand describes itself as outdoor people making sustainable clothes purpose-built for outdoor adventures. This means each garment is stress-tested against anything the outdoors can throw at it, so you can be certain of its quality and longevity.

These cosy ethical hoodies are made using 100% organic cotton, which is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Silverstick also uses low-impact dyes that are independently certified as non-toxic. This means its clothes are free from nasties like heavy metals, ammonia treatments, azo dyes, bleaches, chlorine, phthalates and formaldehyde.

TenTree

  • Price: £ – ££
  • Fits: XS – XXL
  • Gender: Male and female styles available
  • UK Delivery cost: £2.95 / Free on orders over £30

TenTree, a Canadian ethical clothing company available in the UK at Wildbounds, is another company to have on your radar. As well as making stylish ethically and sustainably produced outdoors and casual wear, it plants 10 trees for every item you purchase – hence the name!

Trees are planted in different countries – mainly Madagascar, and Indonesia – in partnership with various reforestation charities, such as Trees for the Future. It is this partnership that ensures meaningful and sustainable replanting.

Of course, it’s not just about the trees (although it’s a good place to start). As a certified B-Corp, every TenTree item is ethically made using only sustainable fabrics. When it comes to its hoodies, that means these are made from fabrics such as TENCEL and organic cotton, in fair and safe working conditions.

Colorful Standard

  • Price: ££
  • FitsXS – XXL
  • Gender: Unisex
  • UK Delivery cost: £7 / Free on orders over £80

Looking for a unisex ethical hoodie in every colour of the rainbow? Head straight to Colorful Standard. This sustainable essentials brand specialises in high-quality unisex clothing in almost every colour you could ever imagine.

Sounds like hyperbole? Hyperbole it is not. Its hoodies come in an amazing 55 different colours – ranging from muted neutrals to bold and vibrant tones. If you can’t find the colour of hoodie you want at Colorful Standard then it probably doesn’t exist!

The best part is that you don’t have to compromise your ethics. All Colorful Standard hoodies are ethically made in Portugal using 100% organic cotton. Colorful Standard also plants one tree for every order placed.

And whilst you might be worried about the environmental impact of these dyes, you can breathe easily. Colorful Standard says all of the dyes it uses to develop the various shades are Oeko-Tex Certified. This is an independent verification scheme where the dyes it uses have been thoroughly tested for harmful chemicals.

What’s more, Colorful Standard products are garment dyed. This means that the items are first produced, and then dyed according to demand only. This way, Colorful Standard can produce its products without wasting large quantities of dye.

Ninety Percent

  • Price: ££ – £££
  • FitsXXS – XXL
  • Gender: Male and female styles available
  • UK Delivery cost: Free

Ninety Percent is a London-based sustainable womenswear and menswear clothing label. It produces luxury ethical basics, such as organic cotton hoodies, and stylish tops crafted from supersoft Tencel. And not only that, but the brand has created a pioneering profit-sharing business model too.

This approach sees Ninety Percent sharing 90% of its distributed profits between five charitable causes close to its heart, and those who make its clothes.

You can get involved too. When you buy an item of clothing from Ninety Percent, you can choose which charity you’d like to support with your purchase. Charities include War Child UK, Wild Aid, Big Life, and more. And if you can’t choose, you can select to support all causes. Here, the distributed profits will be shared equally between all of the causes.

It’s not just the materials and the profit-sharing that make Ninety Percent a top choice for ethical hoodies. Every aspect of its operations is carefully considered. Ninety Percent shy away from short-lived trends, so you won’t find any fast fashion here. Instead, you’ll only find clothes built to last, and love.

In terms of manufacturing, all of Ninety Percent’s clothing is made in Bangladesh. Whilst at first glance that might not sound so ethical, its factory is an industry-leading garment manufacturing facility that puts people and the planet first. From fair wages, health insurance and childcare, to a free hot lunch every day, Ninety Percent is dedicated to setting the very best standard.

Patagonia

  • Price: ££ – £££
  • FitsXS – XXL
  • Gender: Male and female and styles available
  • UK Delivery cost: £4.49 / Free on orders over £75

Patagonia’s ethical hoodies – available in the UK at AlpineTrek – are Fairtrade certified. This means that as well as paying the Fairtrade premium, to ensure producers are paid a fair price, Patagonia pays an additional premium for every Patagonia item that carries the Fair Trade Certified™ sewn label. That extra money then goes directly to the workers at the factory, and they decide how to spend it.

Here workers have chosen to use the premiums to fund community projects. These have included health-care programmes or a child-care centre. In other cases, workers have chosen to purchase products they could not otherwise afford, like a laptop computer or a stove. Whilst in other cases, workers have opted to take a cash bonus.

What’s more, Patagonia’s hoodies are designed to last and be repairable. Its website also advises on how to repair all Patagonia items, which is seriously useful. And for any clothing that can’t be repaired then you can drop it off at a Patagonia store for recycling or repurposing.
