Many of us have faced up to the problems caused by fast fashion, and are instead trying to shop more ethically.
However, there are some areas of the ethical clothing market where it’s nearly impossible to find what you are looking for. Ethically made underwired bras. Men’s shirts. Smart trousers, or smart jackets, for example. These are almost impossible to buy, save for shopping secondhand.
On the opposite end of the scale, there’s the ethical hoodie market. Ethical consumers are entirely spoiled for choice when it comes to finding organic, Fairtrade, and ethically produced hoodies. But where to begin finding the best hoodies according to your budget and personal ethics? To help you out, I’ve rounded up my favourites to keep you sustainably cosy.

I’m mindful that everyone has different ethics when it comes to clothing. As such, this guide has been designed to be a starting point for you to research the most sustainable option for your own particular set of ethics.
Silverstick

Looking for outdoor clothing made by people who understand the meaning of outdoor performance wear? Then try Silverstick.
Silverstick says it is on a mission to get people outdoors. In fact, the brand describes itself as outdoor people making sustainable clothes purpose-built for outdoor adventures. This means each garment is stress-tested against anything the outdoors can throw at it, so you can be certain of its quality and longevity.
These cosy ethical hoodies are made using 100% organic cotton, which is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Silverstick also uses low-impact dyes that are independently certified as non-toxic. This means its clothes are free from nasties like heavy metals, ammonia treatments, azo dyes, bleaches, chlorine, phthalates, and formaldehyde.
Sassyspud

Sassy Spud is an affordable, ethical clothing brand that makes fun, PETA-approved vegan hoodies that are printed or embroidered to order to minimise waste.
Promising to be 100% sweatshop-free, it makes all of its cotton hoodies (although I’d love to see them swap this to organic cotton) in WRAP certified factories. This means that the factories meet internationally recognised social compliance standards and guarantee that workers are provided with safe, dignified, and properly paid employment.
Sassy Spud also gives back. 10% of the profits from every order are donated to UK mental health charities, including The Mix, Mind, and Shout, among others.
BAM

BAM has a lovely range of ethical hoodies for men and women, made from a range of sustainable materials, including organic cotton and bamboo.
Many pieces (although not all) have also been certified recyclable by the Circular Textiles Foundation. This means that BAM has not only designed it to be recycled, but it has also guaranteed that there is a facility that can recycle it.
As such, when your hoodie is no longer wearable, you can send it back for free with BAM’s ’73 Zero’ Take-Back Scheme. Check the description before you buy to see if the hoodie you like is part of this scheme.
As well as this, BAM has set itself some big sustainability targets. By 2030, it wants to send nothing to landfill, create no pollution, and waste no water. These goals cover everything the company does – from the way its fabrics are made, to how the clothes themselves are produced, and even how they’re dealt with once they’ve reached the end of their life.

TenTree, a Canadian ethical clothing company, is another brand to have on your radar. As well as making stylish, ethically and sustainably produced outdoors and casual wear, it plants 10 trees for every item you purchase – hence the name!
Trees are planted in different countries – mainly Madagascar and Indonesia – in partnership with various reforestation charities, such as Trees for the Future. It is this partnership that ensures meaningful and sustainable replanting.
Of course, it’s not just about the trees (although it’s a good place to start). As a certified B-Corp, every TenTree item is ethically made using only sustainable fabrics. When it comes to its hoodies, that means these are made from fabrics such as TENCEL and organic cotton, in fair and safe working conditions.
VO

Every piece is built to last, and made from premium cotton (although I’d love to see them made from organic cotton). They’re produced in WRAP-certified ethical facilities. Each hoodie is then finished in the UK with expert embroidery.
VO also keeps packaging plastic-free. But what’s even better is that each purchase helps fund conservation projects. Ten percent of profits support conservation work across the globe, from protecting rainforests and oceans to restoring British wildlands.
Plant Faced

The brand hasn’t stopped there. It has created a pioneering profit-sharing business model too. This approach sees Ninety Percent sharing 90% of its distributed profits between five charitable causes close to its heart, and those who make its clothes.
You can get involved too. When you buy an item of clothing from Ninety Percent, you can choose which charity you’d like to support with your purchase. Charities include War Child UK, Wild Aid, Big Life, and more. And if you can’t choose, you can select to support all causes. Here, the distributed profits will be shared equally between all of the causes.

Patagonia’s ethical hoodies are Fairtrade certified. This means that, as well as paying the Fairtrade premium, to ensure producers are paid a fair price Patagonia pays an additional premium for every Patagonia item that carries the Fair Trade Certified™ sewn label. That extra money then goes directly to the workers at the factory, and they decide how to spend it.
Here, workers have chosen to use the premiums to fund community projects. These have included health-care programmes or a child-care centre. In other cases, workers have chosen to purchase products they could not otherwise afford, like a laptop computer or a stove. Whilst in other cases, workers have opted to take a cash bonus.
What’s more, Patagonia’s hoodies are designed to last and be repairable. Its website also advises on how to repair all Patagonia items, which is seriously useful. And for any clothing that can’t be repaired, then you can drop it off at a Patagonia store for recycling or repurposing.

Is there any company out there that makes such products in larger sizes? Whether one is just plain larger, or as in many cases, one prefers oversized clothing for a variety of reasons, it is always frustrating to see that nobody offers their clothing in such ranges.
Hi Diana, I’ve got a guide to plus-size ethical clothing that I’m trying to expand as I find more options. Unfortunately with hoodies, I really struggled to find anywhere that offers anything made ethically beyond an XXL. If I come across anywhere I’ll be sure to update this guide.
